The worst about kidney stones is that once you have had them, they can come back and haunt you. Even if it’s your first time, different forms of care are available to reduce the suffering they produce.

High content oxalate foods (spinach, Swiss chard, beet greens, collards, okra, chocolate, wheat bran, wheat germ, etc) should be avoided as much as possible to prevent the risk of generating kidney stones. Exercising and watching what you eat is the first step in preventing this ailment to grow,

The most common type of kidney stone is caused from calcium oxalate. Recent studies have shown foods high in calcium, including dairy products, may stop calcium stones from forming. Definitely, cut back, on drinking soda and iced tea which are both high in oxalate. Oxalate cannot be burned by our bodies and if not eliminated through urine, it binds to calcium and forms kidney stones.

Another home-type treatment you can adopt is to drink more fluids, like tap or bottled water in a moderately increasing fashion. Water will help the smaller stones travel out of your body when you urinate. It is not recommended to make a sudden increase in consumption. Consult your physician before radically making any modifications to your diet. In any event, it is always preferable to drink water, fruit juices and lemonade rather than tea, beer or alcoholic beverages when you are thirsty.

Around 20% of recurring kidney stones presence is created by chronic infections in the urinary tract. While drinking water may help the small stones, infection should be treated through medication prescribed by a licenses doctor. If you are already taking prescription drugs, please inform your physician on the nature, dosage and reasons you are ingesting these drugs.

As the remaining stones get bigger, even drinking large amounts of liquid will not prevent the stones from blocking part or all of the urinary tract and creating intense pain. Studies are now being conducted on the severity of kidney stones in patients lacking Oxalobacter formigenes, which is a colonic bacterium that degrades oxalates in the body. As the pain in your back and while urinating or menstruating will indicate the presence of medium size stones, please ask your doctor about this research and medication that may accompany it.

Treatment for large kidney stones sometimes requires medical procedures. A device called a lithotripter pulverizes the kidney stones with ultrasonic waves. This is a very successful treatment that can be performed as outpatient. You will be allowed to stay awake if you wish during the operation. Patients are back to normal, usually in less than a week.

The larger the kidney stone, the more considerable the pain and the danger to health. Surgery under anesthesia may be required to remove or smash the stones. The physicians may use ultrasonic or laser equipment inserted through the side of the patient. When oxalates can be fully understood, science will move a step forward to eliminating kidney stones at the source rather than having to treat them.
