These animals are considered despicable beings in books and movies but those perceptions are not at all true. If you get to know them better, you will realize that snakes are wonderful creatures that aren’t as bad as their onscreen persona.
REMEMBER, snakes should always be cradled with great care because sudden movements by the one carrying it can result to a defensive mode.
A pet snake offers a lot of possibilities for the owner. First, snakes are very quiet animals which could really be beneficial to the owner since it will never be a cause of disturbance. Second, they are easy to maintain since they do not emit any foul-smelling odor or make a big mess in their cages. Third, feeding them will not be a problem for the owner since small snakes do not really eat that much. You first have to ask yourself about the amount you are willing to shell out for your new pet. You should also think of the housing setup of this exotic animal. There is also the color and appearance of the snake you would like to have. You can observe the snakes’ behavior in your local pet stores and from there you can pick the one you like.
Garter Snakes are the best snakes to start with. They are appropriate for novice snake owner since they are tolerant of people. They also live up to 12 years so as a pet owner, you have all the time to study its habits and to enjoy taking care of it. If you have a tight budget, Garter Snakes will do since they are inexpensive.
Snow Corn Snakes are those snakes often seen in zoos. They are displayed more often than other species since they look more attractive and comes in different colors. They are as small as Garter Snakes. Snow Corn Snakes can easily adapt to human handling therefore they make good pets.
Pythons are not good for novice snake pet owners. Herpetologists should be the only ones handling them. Pythons are basically constrictors and individuals with no prior handling training of pythons may not last. Royal Python from Africa is considered the smallest in the species and has a life span of about 30 years. They avoid contact with other animals so they prefer hiding.
Prior to purchasing the snake you have your eye on, check with your local community first regarding rules on pet owning. There are animals which are considered endangered thereby personally owning them is prohibited. If you do so, you will have to face the consequences of your action.
