Sometimes a traditional facelift is more than a person needs. If all you have are fine lines, skin discolorations and some wrinkles, a better alternative may be a laser facelift. If you have just hit middle age, a laser facelift could be all you need to look younger.

Laser facelifts, more commonly called “laser resurfacing”, uses a carbon dioxide laser to remove layers of skin. The laser can be concentrated on specific trouble areas such as those around the eyes and the mouth or it can be done across the entire face. You can have this done in less than an hour. This is better than having a chemical peel because it is much more precise, the healing process is shorter and there is usually no bleeding.

Unlike traditional facelifts, this treatment does not actually lift your skin. The results are a more youthful appearance because when you take away the top layers, you get rid of fine lines and minimize wrinkles. “New” skin emerges. A laser facelift does not prevent skin aging and it does not perform miracles, but it does have the benefit of giving your skin a healthy glow.

Important Information

If you have a dark complexion, this treatment is not for you. Darker skin will have pigmentation problems if this type of treatment is done. It is recommended for those with fair skin that is healthy and not oily.

Wrinkles will not magically disappear. Fat bulges cannot be corrected and sagging is not fixed with this laser treatment.

You will have some tenderness and areas of discoloration for a few days.

If done improperly, there can be adverse effects such as permanent skin damage.

Besides this type of laser treatment, there is a laser treatment that heats the collagen under the surface of the skin. This causes the skin to tighten, making for a minor kind of facelift. The best part about this type of treatment is that there is no down time. You can have it done on your lunch hour and go right back to work when you are done.

Both of these laser treatments may be used in combination with a traditional lift. When the treatments are combined, the skin is lifted with surgery, tightened with heated collagen, and fine lines and wrinkles are dramatically minimized with resurfacing.
