Driving tips this Summer for US Visitors
Summer is a great time for USA visitors & tourists to plan a road vacation. You may be taking a short weekend trip or an entire month off. To be safe and comfortable you must follow some basic tips.
1. It is important to have the manufacturer recommended tire pressure in your tires. You can find the recommended amount in the doorjamb on the driver’s side. Correct tire pressure ensures proper contact between the tire and the road. Tires loose air pressure every month, so check them often. It is also the easiest way to improve your car’s fuel economy.
2. Schedule an oil change before your trip. Warm weather may require thicker oil. Pay attention to the coolant/antifreeze ratio, it should be around 50/50.
3. Make sure the belts and hoses are in a good condition, and all the fluids are topped off. Batteries usually have a life span of 3 to 5 years. It is a good idea to have the battery tested because extreme weather can put a strain on an older battery.
4. Auto Club memberships can be very helpful during such trips. They can assist with tire changes, locked doors, towing etc. Take your membership card with you. If you have a newer car check with your dealer if road side assistance is included from the manufacturer.
5. Keep an emergency kit in your car trunk at all times. You must have a flashlight, first aid kit, jumper cables, some food, water, basic tools. You can purchase a fully assembled kit in an auto store.
6. Pack a small cooler with bottled water, crackers, cereal bars, fruit, milk etc., to keep you and your family hydrated and hunger-free. Refill your cooler at gas stations and rest stops so you will always have food available. Sodas and salty snacks can make you more thirsty.
7. Drive safely and observe all the rules. Take a break if you are sleepy or tired. Seat belts can save your life. Fasten seatbelts and use car seats for your children.
Invest in a good visitor medical insurance plans for those unforseen accidents and sicknesses. Enjoy your summer vacation!
