Technology has come so far in the past ten years. It is hard to even imagine that it was only within the last thirty years in our history that personal computers came into existence.
Today, we have computers that connect to a world wide internet, offering us a vast array of multimedia and just about anything we could have ever dreamed of using a computer for, has now become a reality.
Along with these amazing new technologies and exchange of information and data, we have also had to bear the unfortunate dilemma of dealing with the misuse of technology by hackers, almost from the inception of personal computing itself. It often seems like We are at the mercy of hackers, and we need to know how we can make sure our privacy and computer security is maintained.
Hackers may have started off with an “us against the machine” type of mentality and acted as a form of protest, but this is no longer the case. Most hackers now only want to wreak havok on unsuspecting computer users. Their primary purpose is to steal or destroy data.

Firewalls can be complicated to set up, but they are essential. Once operating, they will safeguard the user from getting viruses through the internet because of this layer of protection.
Next important is the AntiVirus software. We have so many new viruses appearing daily, that there are AntiVirus software companies that, solely, check for new viruses, build into their software an antidote and then issue these updates to owners of their product. The AntiVirus software is designed to prevent any viruses from being executed on the computer, thereby, preventing disaster.
There are numerous other ways that we computer users can protect ourselves from these online nasties, such as being very careful about opening emails with attachments and watching what websites we visit. We must also realize that the hackers have become very sophisticated and even offer us virus and spyware-filled software programs masquerading as AntiVirus and Firewall software.
One of the best things we can do is to find out, from reputable sources, what we need to be look out for and what software we should use. If we will take the time to find out what the hackers are doing, we will be much better at keeping them at bay and avoiding their attacks.
