No room in your home is as private, practical and personal as the bathroom. We use this room as we start our day, end our day, and for relaxation in the form of baths and primping.

In addition, this room has to do all of this plus serve and please all of the members of the household, and do it all in a relatively small space. No wonder decorating a bathroom is so challenging.

Creativity and imagination are really needed to make this room serve all of its purposes for everyone.

If you don’t have a bathroom that is the size of a bedroom, and few of us have, your first step should be to use the space as efficiently as possible. You’d be surprised how much additional use you can make out of small spaces.

Using your creativity, you can put some features high up or in other out of the way spots. Linen space, storage for infrequently used items and extra towels can put almost anywhere, and this will free up space around the main work area, the sink.

Shelving can store many items, and if less frequently used items are on shelves or cabinets that are high, a small step stool will solve the access problem. You budget may limit you, but can use your dollars wisely. First of all, for any permanent structures, such as shelves or cabinets, spend the extra money to get quality items that will last longer. Otherwise, with low quality items, you may end up replacing them in a year or two and paying even more over time. If you opt for the cheap but replaceable route, make sure you install everything so it is easier to remove and replace.

Mirrors should be hung on hooks, rather than screwed in, put linoleum down with nails that blend, instead of using hard to remove glue. Fixtures are another item where it pays to get better quality. A cheap fan will be so noisy it will ruin your relaxing bath.

Poor lighting will make shaving and makeup application difficult. Think about these things in advance so you allocate your design dollars more efficiently.

The shower is also a place where you should not scrimp. the valves, knobs and shower heads you choose will matter; frequent plumbing problems will cost more than buying quality items in the first place, and dampness behind walls will extensive damage that may require tearing down walls.

The heating in your bathroom can be either electric or gas, but electric is cheaper to install. Plus, if you change the flooring, you can consider radiant floor heating, a real luxury for peanuts.

Installing floor heating is not difficult. A sheet of material that has wiring in it is laid before the flooring is put down.

Since heat rises, this energy is not wasted, but will contribute to heating the entire home.

If you are budgeting both time and money, you can space out your project. Do the floors this month, put in new cabinets next month, install fixtures the following month. If you plan this project carefully, you can create a personalized bathroom to soak away your cares.
