An Interview With A Glitz Girl of Glitz Design
Interviewer: Is everyone as crazy about the Roller Doodles as my customers?
Ginger John: Seriously! They’re definitely a favorite. Every time we come out with new styles and sizes they get grabbed up like they’re a limited edition or something!
Interviewer: Any chance you’ll be bringing back the Glitz Netz? Maybe even with some additional colors?
Ginger John: I know. We have requests every now and then and we will definitely keep Glitz Netz in mind. If we’re able to offer it again I’ll let you know personally!
Interviewer: So…how did the Glitz Girls meet and what made you decide to go ahead and do it and create Glitz Design?
Ginger John: Well, Laura and I live pretty close to each other and Laura and Erin have been friends for ages so I guess Laura brought the three of us together in a way. We felt like we had some really innovative ideas and definite opinions about what we’d like to see available in the industry and we all love creating and scrapbooking (in very different ways). It was a big leap, but we all jumped and after a ton of seemingly endless hard work…we’re still here!
Interviewer: Tell me about the husbands…are they involved? Supportive?
Ginger John: At first they were all just indulging us in our little hobby; going along for the ride and humoring us. But now they’re coming to shows with us and giving us business advice. They’re all so sweetly proud. (I find it pretty much adorable).
Interviewer: Do the Glitz Girls ever get to sit down and scrapbook together?
Ginger John: We do; actually we just got together this morning. We were working on a potential upcoming class idea; an acrylic clock. It was really fun. I wish we got together to scrapbook more often, but we are all really busy getting everything done to keep Glitz running smoothly!
Interviewer: So tell me…what do the Glitz eat when they scrapbook? What do they wear?
Ginger John: Personally, I usually have a Dr. Pepper sitting beside me. Laura and Erin tend to munch on something chocolate. Laura made no-bake cookies for all of us today! I think the three of us all lean towards jeans and a T-shirt. Isn’t that what all us Mom’s wear?
Interviewer: Any advice for anyone that has never scrapbooked digitally?
Ginger John: I always tell people who haven’t tried digital scrapbooking that they need to just jump in and give it a try. Take a tutorial. Choose a project that doesn’t immediately leave you feeling overwhelmed. Starting with a digital card making cd rather than full layouts works for a lot of newbies. And, of course, I recommend the Glitz Create A Card CDs!
Interviewer: Which line of Glitz is your favorite to play with?
Ginger John: They change seasonally, as you can imagine. But I do have a soft spot for the peacock in our Rhapsody collection. I’ve had a lot of fun with that peacock! And I always love when we’re able to come out with a boy line that is fun and easy to work with; probably because I’ve always had a hard time coming up with paper to use for pages and projects for my son!
Interviewer: Share with me…one thing you think every scrapbooker ought to know.
Ginger John: Well, this might be random, but the first thing that comes to mind is that what really matters when you look back on a layout is whether or not it tells a story. It can’t just look pretty. It should make you cry or smile, or maybe bust out laughing.
Interviewer: What’s your favorite part of being a Glitz Girl?
Ginger John: The CHA shows! They’re absolutely amazing; so fun and so exciting!
Interviewer: What has been the hardest experience since starting Glitz Design?
Ginger John: Balance! All three of us would agree that the hardest part is giving enough of ourselves to each aspect of our lives: Glitz girl, Mom, Wife, Daughter, Sister, Friend…but then balance is something I think everyone struggles with at one point or another. Most days I think I’m doing a pretty good job and some days I realize that the balance has shifted without my knowledge and I have to re-evaluate!
Interviewer: The Glitz Design website is a fun place if you’re a woman. Is it everything you imagined when you started the process?
Ginger John: It is! The only problem is that my imagination keeps on moving! I do LOVE the feel of our glitzy, fun website, but I’ve always got some new idea or change rolling around in my head.
Interviewer: Is there anyone in the scrapbooking industry that you admire?
Ginger John: I can’t answer that question with just one name. It’s one of the reasons I love going to the shows…they’re filled with creative, amazing people!
Interviewer: Chocolate or candy?
Ginger John: I often go for both, but if I had to pick I’d go chocolate!
Interviewer: Diet or loaded?
Ginger John: There’s no “leaning” here…always absolutely loaded!
Interviewer: Is there a certain time when you get inspired?
Ginger John: When I see other people being creative it makes my juices start to flow. Or when I go shopping. Or when I watch TV sometimes…Could my answer be that it depends on my mood?
Interviewer: Favorite movie?
Ginger John: Willow. You might think I’m nuts now, but it’s something that I held on to from my childhood. My brothers and sisters and I used to watch it a lot and anytime I need some background noise…I lean towards Willow!
Interviewer: What do you like to see in your own layouts?
Ginger John: I want them to see the story behind the picture! First and foremost I want my children to be able to look at it and basically use it as a journal for our lives; something they can look back on in the years to come!
Interviewer: What’s your favorite scrapbooking rule?
Ginger: Well, since I have the need to tell a story…I say journaling is a must!
Interviewer: Any advice for others who want to do what you’ve done?
Ginger John: Don’t worry if it’s hard; it’s supposed to be! Good luck!
