Acne and Skin Care

A careful skin care regimen will only slightly affect whether or not you get acne. However, healthy skin and the treatment of acne are highly contingent on good skin care habits.

It is a common misconception that acne can be prevented by thoroughly scrubbing the skin. Washing has little effect, actually, on whether acne develops or not. Once acne has erupted, the effects occur mostly afterward.

In general, scrubbing only tends to roughen and dry the skin instead of helping it. Lower layers of skin develop a protective coating of oil and outer dermis when exposed to harsh treatments. The skin is then exposed to airborne and contact bacteria in the interim. Protecting us against any type of pathogen is the skin’s main purpose. By removing multiple layers, you’re actually weakening its defenses.

The answer to healthy skin is to gently wash it with a mild cleanser. Wash completely, but do not rub hard. Not only your face, but also the back, shoulders and chest area can develop acne, so be sure to wash them in the shower. It is a good idea to clean your entire face, from below the jaw up to the hairline, twice a day; around the middle of the day, and at night.

Removing every trace of natural skin oil or sebum, which plays a role in developing acne, is not favorable. Micro-cracks are discouraged from forming because of the flexibility that sebum provides the skin. These micro-cracks are the perfect breeding ground for bacteria. If the skin becomes excessively dry, small cracks can occur in the outer layers.

If using astringents to reduce excess oil, do not use them too frequently. Acne washes available without a prescription are precisely developed to attain the proper equilibrium. Make sure to follow the directions when you use them.

Of course, shaving is always a challenge. Men’s faces are always more difficult. When the skin contains blemishes, even electric razors may nick the skin. Ultimately, though, nothing can replace a careful, patient and steady hand. Using a pre-shave skin softener can also help.

Another helpful tip is to use a softener before shaving. It is fine to use either a manual or electric safety razor. It does not play an important part in the development of acne. Acne is caused by different reasons including ingrown hair and clogged pores. It is important, though, to shave with, not against the grain of the hair. The process can be enhanced by using warm water and soap to soften up the beard.

For women, there are some other recommendations that can be helpful.

Currently, it is much easier to choose makeup products. Formulations that specifically address the possibility of acne are numerous. These products are formulated so that they do not clog the pores. A light application of foundation makeup is less clogging to the pores. When applying blush, use it subtly, not heavily. Search for makeup that has been labeled “non-comedogenic.” Mild acne, including blackheads and whiteheads, is commonly referred to as “Comedones.”

Over-the-counter antibacterial products are most effective after acne has developed. Skin care products can help acne but only if used as directed. Medication can be overused and acne is exacerbated by the clogged pores and injured skin that the medication can cause.

The key to minimizing outbreaks in order to allow for natural oil movement and shedding skin cells is keeping pores open. Both are aided by proper skin care practices.
