You may have wanted to start a diet many times in the past, only to shy away from it because of some of the things you’ve heard or the self-doubt you have to succeed. There are many myths about dieting, and hopefully, we’ll dispel them today!

It’s been said that eating between meals will destroy your chances of a successful diet. This is not true because you should not starve yourself or else you will lose energy plus possibly eat too much when it comes time to have a meal. Satisfy your hunger but keep track of the calories.

Another myth we face in our quest for a slimmer waistline is the one that tells us to only eat a certain type of food all day, every day. Grapefruit, pepper- laden water, and even hot dog diet fads have resulted in many binges over the years. Following dangerous fad diets means your body’s not getting the necessary nutrients it needs to fight off illnesses and stay healthy.

It’s also been said that you must stay strictly to the foods your diet calls for and you can never stray from those foods or else you’ll have to do five thousand jumping jacks to burn off that piece of pie you ate at lunch. This is not true. You can have a treat as long as you count the calories and reduce the calories from your next meal. Exercise as normal, but please, don’t be a prisoner to your diet.

One myth you may hear is the one that says you can’t eat before you go to bed, because you’ll get fat in your sleep. This one isn’t true because a diet only means that you’re eating healthy and watching your caloric intake for the day. Having a light snack before bed isn’t going to make a big difference unless it’s a 7-course meal or a full gallon of Ben and Jerry’s Cherry Garcia.

While on the subject of calories, there are some diets that tell you to remove all calories from your diet completely. This is very harmful and will actually slow down your weight loss process. You need calories for energy; without them you cannot burn the excess calories you have built up (fat). Consult your doctor to find out who many calories a day you should be taking in and stay within those guidelines; but for goodness sakes, don’t eliminate them completely. It’s like trying to run a car without gas.

We all agree that dairy foods are high in fat and some diets will tell you to not take in any dairy products at all. Dairy is also essential for maintaining a healthy body; you can’t live without it, so to speak. Add dairy products into your diet, using the low fat items, and count them into your calorie allotment. Don’t give up those important vitamins your body needs.

You shouldn’t believe everything you see or read concerning diets; the best way to get the results you desire is to eat healthy and exercise.
